This is a repeat of the October 2024 PreConference Workshop at the ICTM Conference -- a great opportunity for anyone that was not able to attend in person.

Fluency is more than basic facts and algorithms. It is complex and teaching it well is challenging. To find success, we must know what it is so that we can teach it well. This session unpacks the big ideas of fluency arming participants with practical know-how for advancing their students’ fluency. Participants will take a deep dive into teaching, practicing, and assessing the strategies of fluent students. Learning will be complemented with ready-to-use classroom resources.

Note:

  • Sessions will not be recorded; live participation is encouraged to gain the full benefit of the interactive components.
  • Participants are encouraged to have the book "Figuring Out Fluency in Mathematics Teaching and Learning, Grades K-8: Moving Beyond Basic Facts and Memorization" to enhance the workshop experience.

Don't miss this opportunity to enrich your teaching practices and support your students in developing meaningful mathematical fluency.

Iowa Higher Education Mathematics Transition Advisory Council (IHEMTAC) is a consortium of mathematics teachers across Iowa at the high school, community college, and university levels, and is funded by a grant from the Iowa Department of Education. They are focused on improving the student experience in mathematics courses at all levels and are especially focused on improving students’ transition from secondary to post-secondary programs.  More information about IHEMTAC is available.

Upcoming regional workshops are evening events in which IHEMTAC will engage with mathematics teachers on issues related to classes and pathways in high school, transition to college (such as placement), and ways to prepare students for success in mathematics at the post-secondary level.  Dinner is provided at these workshops.
