2018 Future Teacher Workshop Sessions

What does a Great Statistics Activity Look Like? — Wendy Weber, Ph.D.

In this session we will begin by talking about the difference between statistics and mathematics. Next, we describe the Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) report and what it means for designing rich statistics activities. Finally, we investigate a roller coaster data set using the Common Online Data Analysis Platform (CODAP). CODAP is a freely available statistical software that allows teachers and students to explore data using the statistical investigative process described in the GAISE report: formulate questions, collect data, analyze data, and interpret results.

Helping Our Students Build Number Sense — Lori Mueller

Many of our students haven’t developed a good understanding of numbers. In this session we will discuss five ways that we can help students to build number sense. We will explore the use of arrow cards and ten-frames, and dive into hundred chart activities. We will also talk about Race to 100 and other mathematical games and last but certainly not least, find out how to do a number talk.

What About Math? — Amy Keller, M.Ed.

Many teachers find ways to differentiate literacy instruction.  Differentiating mathematics seems more demanding or challenging.  Participants will explore ways to meet the growing diversity of learning needs, focus on strategies for making tasks accessible, challenging and interesting and look at specific management skills.

DESMOS — Kate Hash

All 7-12 math educators need to know about DESMOS! Desmos provides both an HTML5 online graphing calculator and classroom activities that increase mathematical sense-making and engagement.  This session will focus on the use of the online graphing calculator and how to use it for instruction.
