Marilyn  Zweng  Memorial  Fund  Grants

Dr. Marilyn Zweng was born in Michigan on March 7, 1932. She grew up in Port Huron, Michigan, and worked with her parents at the gas station they owned. She did her undergraduate work at Michigan State University and earned her PhD from the University of Wisconsin.

Dr. Zweng was a professor of Mathematics Education and Chair of the Secondary Education Department at the College of Education at the University of Iowa. She joined the faculty in 1965. She was the first female department chair at the University of Iowa College of Education. She enjoyed hosting parties for visiting guests and graduate students. She would invite 20-30 people to each party and use place settings of china she collected from places she gave talks or from conferences she presented at in North America, Europe and Asia. Her cat was very friendly and enjoyed meeting all the visitors. She retired in 1992. Dr. Zweng died on August 13, 2019. Henry Kepner was Dr. Zweng’s first graduate student at the University of Iowa and Denny St. John was her final graduate student.

Dr. Zweng hosted a Wisconsin Public Television show called Mathematics with Marilyn. This was part of her doctoral work at the University of Wisconsin. She was recognized widely by teachers and students when she was out in the community. A major part of this work was helping students develop a deeper understanding of place value using alternate algorithms and manipulatives.

As a strong supporter of teachers and mathematics education, Dr. Zweng was an active member of both the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Iowa Council of Teachers of Mathematics. She authored articles, books and other publications. She was an editor for NCTM’s yearbooks through the 1970s and specifically 1986 Yearbook on Estimation and Mental Computation, 1985 Yearbook for Secondary School Mathematics Curriculum and the Proceedings of the Fourth International Congress on Mathematics Education in 1983.

Past Recipients of the Marilyn Zweng First Year Teacher Grant

I am currently teaching at Newton Iowa for 6th grade full time math. I can’t wait to use the money on resources for the kids in my classroom. It will lead to success and more access to different materials. I will certainly pay it forward.
