Wartburg
College
has hosted the American Mathematics Contest (AMC 10 and AMC 12) for the last
two years. This year we had 31 students total including large groups from
WACO
, BCLUW and Valley Lutheran. Wartburg will host again in 2012. (reported

Congratulations
to Cathy Gorini!
Master Math: Probability
by Cathy Gorini, Maharishi University of
Management, has just been published by Cengage.
Master Math: Probability
explains probability in simple terms, covering background material in set
theory, combinatorics, and computational techniques and all the topics in
probability that are usually covered in an introductory course in probability or
in a combined probability-statistics course. Exercises with complete solutions
are included every topic.

High
School Math Contest
Central
College
hosts the Little Hawkeye Conference Math Contest on Wednesday April 13th. The
contest is for 9-12th graders from the eight schools of the conference. We have
an exam, do math relays, and have time for some fun math games. This year we are
going to do SET.

Real
World Externships for Math Teachers
Over the last two summers, mathematics (and science) teachers have been
welcomed into
Iowa
industries for immersive work experiences applying their content knowledge to
real challenges, and picking up career information for their students along the
way. Their private sector hosts have benefited as well with considerable value
brought to the front office or manufacturing floor by a bright, autonomous,
innovative teacher. High school math teachers have gained much and contributed
valuably to a variety of businesses and industries. For example, two mathematics
teachers spent summer at Hy-Vee's corporate headquarters developing new
inventory software. Another applied his numbers sense to streamlining an
efficiency measurement system at the Ambulatory Surgery Center of Allen
Hospital. Yet another applied her mathematical know-how to helping Sudenga
Manufacturing analyze raw materials consumption with
production forecasts. Applications are now being accepted for a variety
of opportunities across the state this summer. Interested teachers should send
an inquiry to IMSEP@uni.edu to see if there's an industry opportunity nearby.
Jeff Weld also reports that Bishop
Heelan teacher Nanette Fladung conducts product testing at Wells Blue Bunny as a
Real World Extern in the summer of 2010. (reported by Jeffrey Weld, UNI –

Maureen Busta notes that
Upper
Iowa
University
will be offering two upper level mathematics courses this Summer Session 2011,
for continuing education credits or accelerated degree program completion. to
provide teachers an opportunity to complete coursework toward their secondary
mathematics endorsement. These
courses will use a combination of video and face-to-face (via web conferencing)
instruction. Students will view custom-made video lectures with homework
assignments and then meet regularly for assistance and additional instruction
via web conferencing.
