of the conference: The
Mindset Revolution: Teaching for a Growth Mindset with Jo
Dweck's work on mindsets has become a high priority for many
schools. Dweck found that when students move from a fixed mindset
(believing that ability is fixed and being good at math is a
"gift") to a growth mindset (believing that smartness grows
with hard work), their learning improves significantly. Mindset
beliefs are hugely significant for mathematics learners and the
opportunities for students to develop a growth mindset are
particularly important in the pursuit of equity and social
justice. In this presentation I will set out the ways mathematics
teachers, of any grade level, can teach for a growth mindset. We
will look at and consider pedagogical structures, mathematics
tasks, assessment and grading policies, grouping arrangements,
encouragement and praise.
