Updated Constitutions were provided to all board members. This constitution reflects the change in voting members of the board (Voting members now includes appointed members to the board.) that was approved by the membership in December.

      D.  NCTM – Nancy Berkas (Affiliate Services Committee Central 2 Region Liaison)

Cheri thanked Nancy Berkas for attending the pre-session and the conference.

Nancy had to leave early due to the weather.

      E. Annual Conference

      Conference –  Dave Blum/Jyll Johnson-Miner

Dave Blum reported that he thought it went well.  Vendors came last night.  Some of the exhibitors broke down at 1:00.  There was not a lot of traffic with the exhibitors after the 1 o’clock keynote.

Dave is checking on the date for next year.  It needs to be the same Friday as the wrestling meet.  He will be able to determine the date within the next couple of days.

(Maureen provided the following numbers to date for conference registrations:

Board members                                24

Speakers                                           92

Exhibitors                                           19

Students                                             52

West Des Moines teachers             55

Others                                  259

Total Registrations 2/21/2007         501

Monies for registrations                   $17, 735.00

      Program -  Ruth Avazian/Connie Nolan

Ruth didn’t hear anything negative and thanked the board for everything.  Ruth thought we had a wide variety of sessions.  The evaluations will reflect problems.  Deb thanked people for helping at pre-session, evaluations were good, 70 people were in attendance.  Cheri thanked Ruth, Jyll, Dave, Travis, for their excellent  work.

      Exhibits –  Travis Nuss

Travis reported that there were 29 vendors with 60 tables.

F.  Publications

JournalLori Mueller, Diane Royer, & Committee

Diane talked about e-mailing speakers to share info in the journal.  Lori says several            articles have already been submitted.  Lori is concerned that we are advertising that        we have an “award winning” journal and does not know how that was determined.

Newsletter  & Website report -- David Burrow

Cheri would like the next newsletter to come out about April 1st.  This will work well to include NCTM conference pictures.  Everyone was asked to submit something to David.  Brooke mentioned that she would like the past newsletters archived on the web.  David indicated that it had been determined that the newsletters were for members only and so it would not work well to have them available on the website. Michael thought it would be good to select an article to put on the web as “from the newsletter.”

G.  Outreach – Cathy Miller

Cathy would like the board to consider as an agenda item in June that if a grant is undersubscribed in one area the monies could be used to fund a grant in another area.

H.  Department of Education –  Judith Spitzli

Presidential Awards – need nominations – currently looking for high school and secondary, a person may nominate themselves, 13 nominations are in, deadline is May 1st.  Videos are to be included and in the past the nominee could submit 60 minutes and select 8 minutes.  Now you do 30 minutes of videos and up to an hour of tape, and you may continue for an hour or submit something else for 30 minutes.  All are encouraged to send those in.

I.   Governmental Liaison Edward Rathmell

Thanked ICTM for approving achievement in mathematics piece.  Ed has sent info to legislators and he indicated that the legislators are reluctant to view the information.  A draft has been going around showing achievement going down, which has been highlighted by Jan Mickelson on the radio.  Legislators have been listening to them more than the experts.  He noted that the graphs are “tainted”  by inaccurate scaling.  Ed will forward some information to Cheri and Maureen for possible inclusion in the newsletter.

J.   NCTM Representative – Michael Link

Michael indicated sales were very good this year yielding between $500 and $600 in sales.  There was nothing to report on the national scene and nothing yet on Atlanta scene

Joyce Becker is appointed NCTM Representative.

K.  IMSC – Cheri Ross and Judy Slezak

Cheri attended the meeting in October and Judy Slezak attended the most recent one.

IMSC was recognized for providing monies in support of our conference.  They are setting goals and determining action to be taken.  Judy spent time writing mission statement and looking at goals.  Cheri indicated we will apply for money from them again.

L.  Regional Directors/Student Director

Annette reported that she has used a master list serve in her area and some of the teachers received it who were not teaching mathematics.  It’s tough to get teachers identified in the mathematics area.  She indicated that she would rather send to too many rather than miss someone.

M.  Outreach –  Cathy Miller –

Cathy thanked Lisa Roose, the current student director.  Cathy has checked with other universities that have math education to check for another student director.

N.  Teacher Shortage Task Force Connie Nolan

Connie attended the Teacher Shortage Task Force and reported that there were 8 groups with 7 in a group composed of DE, educational examiners, etc.   The groups spent time brainstorming to resolve teacher education, too much negative stuff put out there, how we deal with that, work environment for new teachers, how to help deal with leadership issues, whether to pay extra monies to math/science, spec ed, ind tech, etc.

III.  New Business

1.  Volunteers for Nominating Committee  (ballot for Nov. 2007) – think about it on the drive home and e-mail Cheri.

Everyone should think about names for the nominating committee.  Board members were encouraged to run for a 2nd term if this is their first term.     Board members were asked to submit names at the June Board meeting for:

          AEA 267, AEA 8, AEA 10, AEA 11, AEA 15, AEA 16

           Vice-President – Middle School

           Vice-President – Post Secondary

    2.  Items to consider at summer retreat

If anyone has items for the June retreat they are to e-mail those to Cheri.

Brooke says how much e-mail helps to discuss things so that meeting goes better.

Daryl says the first 24 – 48 hours will get responses.

Adjournment

(Link, Royer) moved to adjourn.
