President Tvrdik called the meeting to order at 3:25
pm. Welcome and introductions were
made.
The following board members were recognized for their
contributions to ICTM as they leave the board:
Joyce Becker (VP Post Secondary and Conference Program Co-Chair), Mary
Friedrich (Executive Secretary), Jean Krusi (VP Middle School), Kevin Astor
(Treasurer), Johanna Baedke (AEA 267), Pam Swan (AEA 8), Judy Slezak (AEA 10),
Diane Royer (AEA 11), Cathy Gorini (AEA 15), Lori Mueller (AEA 16).
The following newly elected board members were introduced:
Catherine Miller (VP Post Secondary), Diane Royer (VP Middle School), Kathy
Wilkerson (AEA 267), Annette Louk (AEA 8), Marlene Meyer (AEA 10), Michael
Marcketti (AEA 11), Brooke Brill (AEA 15), Rose Jennings (AEA 16), Laura
Brincks (treasurer).
Astor moved to destroy the ballots from the recent
election. Seconded by Schafer. Aye: 19

The following appointments were made:
- Executive
Secretary: Maureen Busta
(effective March 1, 2006) Link
moved to appoint Busta as incoming Executive Secretary. Seconded by Burrow. Aye:
19 Nay: 0
Link moved to accept Friedrich’s
resignation as of March 31, 2006.
(There will be a month of overlap so that Friedrich can assist with the
transition.) Seconded by Burrow. Aye:
19 Nay: 0.
Slezak moved to pay Friedrich one
month of salary to cover the transition to the new secretary. Seconded by Avazian. Aye:
19 Nay: 0.
- NCTM
Representative: Michael Link. It was felt that this position should
be a rotating position, especially since ICTM provides financial support
to attend the NCTM annual conference.
This would allow more people to have this experience. It might be advisable to have this
appointment be from June – June.
It was decided to discuss this position further during the June
retreat. A motion was made by Ross
to wait until the June retreat of finalize this appointment. Seconded by Rathmell. Aye: 19 Nay: 0
- Governmental
Liaison: It was moved by Burrow to
appoint Ed Rathmell as the Governmental Liaison. Seconded by File. Aye: 19

- Newsletter
Editor: It was moved by Kohlhaas
to appoint David Burrow as Newsletter Editor. Seconded by Krusi. Aye: 19

- Department
of Education: Avazian moved to
appoint Judith Spitzli as the Department of Education representative. Seconded by Royer. Aye: 19 Nay: 0
- Journal
Co-Editors: Krusi moved that Lori
Mueller and Diane Royer be appointed at Journal Co-Editors. Seconded by Swan. Aye: 19 Nay: 0
- Student
Director: Krusi moved that Lisa
Teeselink be appointed Student Director.

Future Meeting Dates:
- NCTM
Annual Meeting – April 26-29, 2006. Burrow moved to approve that ICTM pay
travel expenses for Link and Ross.

- Summer
Board Retreat – June 16-17, 2006 in Mason City. Begins at noon on Friday and ends Saturday at 3 pm.

Secretary’s Report:

Rathmell moved to accept the minutes from the June, 2005 board

distributed a copy of the board listing and asked members to note any
corrections.
Treasurer’s Report:
Astor
- Astor
shared information on the budget and reimbursement procedures. Slezak moved to approve the budget at
presented. Seconded by Wankum.

Membership Report:

- Friedrich
distributed various membership lists to board members and reviewed the
data that was presented.
Other Business – Update on Iowa Mathematics and Science
Coalition (IMSC)
- Tvrdik
requested a $500 contribution to support the conference.
Regional Directors Handbooks:
- If you
are leaving the board, please pass on your handbook to the incoming
regional director.
Constitution:
- Friedrich
will email Burrow the newest version of the constitution and Burrow will
put this document on the website.
Annual Conference Report:
Blum/Miner
- West
Des Moines was a good site to work with.
- Stueben
did another great job with the exhibitors. The word from the exhibitors
was good this year. They were
happier with the set-up this year.
Annual Conference Program Report: Becker/Nolan
- Becker
began recruiting for speakers during the summer and had most of them
selected by early fall. She shared
a short description of the job.
- There
were a good number of sessions for elementary teachers
- Friedrich
shared data on numbers attending.
Publications Report:
Tvrdik for Mueller
- 550
copies of the Journal were recently mailed. This is the first journal with a color cover.
- Conference
speakers will be invited to write an article for upcoming journals.
- There
will be an article in the next newsletter noting a few corrections to the
journal.
Newsletter and Website Report: Burrow
- Feel
free to share comments regarding the website.
- The
next newsletter will go out in late April or early May. Get your articles to Burrow or Tvrdik.
Department of Education Report: Spitzli
- Presidential
Award Program: The three finalists
are Diane Royer, Linda Seeger and
Pam Swan.
- Cognitive
Guided Instruction is another DE initiative that was started last
summer. There will be a second
summer in 2006.
- Every
Student Counts: They are in the
second year of the third round of training.
- Eric
Hart and Spitzli are co-chairing the Model Core Curriculum initiative.
Governmental Liaison Report: Rathmell
- Rathmell
shared some recent articles from the Des Moines Register.
- Summer
Conference: It is the intent of
UNI to host a summer conference every other summer. The next one will be scheduled for
2007. The format would be more
discussion rather than many lectures.
- Rathmell
shared a listing of projects that were funded as a result of the IMSC
Summit on Mathematics, Science and Technology Education (held in
November).
- Rathmell
is continuing to write op ed pieces for the Des Moines Register. He will share them as they are
published.
- The
Richard Cohen article was discussed.
NCTM Representative’s Report: Link
- Share
information that grants are available through NCTM.
- Sharing
of our membership database with NCTM will be an agenda item for the June
board meeting.
Student Director Report:
Teeselink
- Conference
presession went well. Teeselink is
looking forward to help plan a similar event for next year.
Regional Director’s Reports:
- The
Friend of Mathematics Award will be given to Virginia Swenson. Bring names of other regional nominees
to the June meeting.
- Regional
directors should be prepared to report at the June board meeting on
activities in their region. If
they are not attending, a written report should be submitted to Ross.
Outreach Committee Report:
Tvrdik for Harvey
- There
were two applications received for the conference travel grant (Royer and
Mueller)
- There
was one application received for the curriculum development grant (Royer)
New Business
Nominating Committee:
- We
need three people to serve on this committee. Please give your name to Ross if you are interested. We will be looking for board members in
the following areas: AEA 1, AEA
4/12, AEA 9, AEA 13, and AEA 14.
We will also be soliciting names at the June board meeting for
Vice-President Secondary and Vice-President Elementary.
Items to Consider at Summer Retreat:
- Membership
for all conference attendees?
Should we offer a year’s membership to all conference attendees as
is done by NCTM?
- Should
we ask speakers to register when they are accepted for the program?
- Should
we give a certificate of membership for portfolios rather than a
membership card or should we e-mail membership confirmation?
- Should
the pre-session be continued for 2007?
Conference 2007:
- Conference
Co-Chairs will be Dave Blum from West Des Moines CSD and Jyll
Johnson-Minor from Johnston CSD.
The conference will be held at Stilwell Junior High School in West
Des Moines. Program Co-Chairs will
be Connie Nolan and another person to be named.
